If it's something you want to play around with, PCem and 86Box both have an array of good video cards (I recently swapped to 86Box for reasons, but it's got more options to play around with). What I generally use is anything that says Tseng Labs ET4000/w32 or ET400AX (it makes the Windows Default theme in Windows 3.1 resemble that of Windows 3.0, but it doesn't screw with anything irreversibly, just a Windows Quirk). Either card can do true color at 640×480 resolution.

I still use WordPerfect mostly because of Reveal Codes and my familiarity with all its shortcuts. It is also very popular among lawyers. There is nothing like it.

I Liked Corel Linux, but it didn't take long before I changed my sources.list to debian stable then debian unstable, which I have stuck with since, so it just ended up being a gateway from the RPM hell distributions to Debian. My stepdad paid to get me into the insider program for Lindows/Linspire in it's pre1.0 early beta phase. In spite of Michael Robertson's tendency to oversell the OS it did start out going in a good direction. When the power dynamics seemed like they shifted too much from the developers to the marketing department Linspire started going down hill. I was a little surprised that some new company thought it was worth buying the rights to the Linspire name.

I was there, and from what I remember, Word Perfect was a native 32-bit x86 Linux app, Corel Draw and Corel Photo-Paint however were ported with the help of Winelib. They were both pretty usable on something 400Mhz or faster, but pretty garbage running on something with a clock less than 300Mhz, but than again, that was standard for anything running under Wine in those days. The UI was revolutionary for someone used to Slackware like me, it made a lot of things a lot easier. I kept using it for a couple of years, for everything day-to-day, except gaming. It was Debian based so there were some things you could get from their repos as well. Those were good days! I eventually migrated to Mandrake as the standard KDE and Gnome environments became better and Corel's distro became frozen in time. Oh, and Wine was pretty crappy even with Corel's and Google's help, it took more than 10 years from that point for it to become what you know as Wine nowadays.

I'm sure Microsoft have all those update files somewhere but they just don't care about ever releasing them again.

28:14 Couldn't you just set the PAL standard in your video capture software used to record this? Feels like under-representing the console for no reason.

(14:21) If I recall correctly, the Linux option for early Eee PC models was just referred to in specifications and shop listings as ‘Linux’ or ‘Linux OS’, no distro mentioned, then users found out it was Xandros 4 when they bought them and poked around in the software. Acer did a similar thing with their early Aspire One models but users found out it was based on Linpus.

As an Argentinian, Corel Linux had a bit of an interesting but tangential impact. When Corel pulled out of the Linux ecosystem and sold the support team and distribution to Xandros, the latter licensed the Spanish and Portuguese versions to an Argentine start-up called Pixart Argentina (which was already established as a local representative of Corel). This company had already been developing a Debian fork, but with the Corel agreement, they were able to integrate the code and make a more direct fork, known as RxArt Desktop, which was offered as a Windows alternative in the same vein as Lindows on all major retailers in the country. Moreover, after the Argentine 2001 crisis, to stimulate PC adoption, the government offered special installment payments to get a PC, which would either come with Windows XP Starter or RxArt. When the Intel Classmate PC initiative was adopted by Argentina in 2010, the first Linux distro to be installed was RxArt (this changed in 2012 when Huayra Linux was developed internally by the government). To me this is relevant because I had friends with RxArt on their computers back at primary school and when I got my Classmate netbook, it had RxArt as well. So in a certain way, some Argentinian Millennials were exposed to Linux thanks to Corel and the local company that represented and carried it forward for 10+ years. Nowadays RxArt is discontinued, and no installers can be found, nor does the company admit of its existence, so it is a form of lost media. But it was not that different to other distros of the time with KDE like Mandriva or Xandros right after the Corel sale, so I wouldn't consider it that big of a loss...

Corel made some terrific software. They had Corel Draw, which was a fusion of bitmap and vector graphics, a fantastic product. Bad management doomed the company, because their product collection was top notch.

I remember when this was first released. I couldn't get it to complete an install, I chalked it up to not having a machine with the proper specs. I tried installing it awhile back in a modern VM, and still couldn't get through the setup.

There seems to be very little information on it, the co-founder of WebTV Networks later founded a company called Moxi Digital where they developed what I consider to be a spiritual successor to WebTV. I remember having a Moxi enabled cable box back in the early to mid 2010s. Maybe this is something you would be interested in looking into? I'm not sure if you can do anything with them these days, there doesn't seem to be any community around it like WebTV.

I was in my PC Technician college course at Algonquin College in 1999. This is in Ottawa which was/is the home of Corel and we had a whole Corel Linux lab sponsored by them.
